This position cultivates and manages relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, community organizations, and volunteers to increase philanthropic support and strengthen community involvement. Serving as an ambassador for Feeding Southwest Virginia, the Development and Volunteer Manager communicates the importance of philanthropy and volunteerism in addressing food insecurity and advancing the Food Bank's mission. 

In addition, this position is responsible for recruiting, training, coordinating, and retaining volunteers who support the daily operations of the Abingdon facility. Working collaboratively with site leadership and program staff, the Development and Volunteer Manager develops and implements volunteer engagement strategies that ensure operational needs are met while creating meaningful and rewarding volunteer experiences.

The Development and Volunteer Manager reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and works collaboratively with the Abingdon Operations Director to ensure the successful execution of development initiatives and volunteer engagement programs.

Development Responsibilities 

As a member of the Development Team, the Development and Volunteer Manager will: 

• Lead the organization's Funds, Fun & Food corporate engagement program by recruiting, cultivating, and recognizing corporate partners to increase annual philanthropic support.  

• Manage a portfolio of approximately 50–75 individual and corporate donors and prospects, utilizing best practices in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and retention.  

• Conduct face-to-face donor meetings, presentations, facility tours, proposal development, and ongoing communications to achieve established fundraising and relationship-building goals.  

• Develop and implement strategies to increase corporate engagement through sponsorship opportunities, food and fund drives, cause-related marketing campaigns, advertising, public relations, and co-branding initiatives.  

• Build long-term donor relationships by implementing effective Moves Management strategies, including regular personal contact through meetings, phone calls, emails, and written correspondence.  

• Collaborate with the Development Team to plan, coordinate, and execute successful fundraising events, community engagement activities, and donor recognition events.  

• Participate in weekly Development Team meetings to review fundraising strategies, donor activity, and campaign progress.  

• Maintain accurate donor records and activity within the organization's donor relationship management (CRM) system.  

• Assist in developing and designing marketing materials, newsletters, email campaigns, donor communications, and other promotional resources.  

Volunteer Management Responsibilities 

The Development and Volunteer Manager will oversee all aspects of volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention by: 

• Recruiting, training, supervising, scheduling, and recognizing volunteers to support Harvest Home Community Kitchen, Abingdon Children's Kitchen, Quality Assurance, Mobile Food Pantry distributions, special events, and other organizational initiatives.  

• Ensuring volunteers assigned to kitchen operations receive appropriate orientation and training in food safety procedures, kitchen operations, and food preparation practices.  

• Coordinating with the Mobile Food Pantry Coordinator and site coordinators to ensure adequate volunteer staffing for all food distributions.  

• Serving as the primary liaison with the Washington County Court System regarding the acceptance, scheduling, and supervision of Community Service Workers (CSWs).  

• Managing monthly inventories and purchasing needs for Harvest Home kitchen serving supplies and equipment.  

• Creating a meaningful, safe, and productive volunteer experience by following established organizational policies and operational standards.  

• Developing and implementing volunteer recruitment strategies through community outreach, volunteer fairs, partnerships, and public engagement opportunities.  

• Scheduling volunteer assignments, facility tours, and volunteer group activities.  

• Maintaining volunteer records, liability waivers, and required documentation.  

• Recognizing volunteer contributions through appreciation events, thank-you notes, and other recognition initiatives.  

• Tracking volunteer participation and service hours using VolunteerHub and preparing monthly reports for the Abingdon Operations Director and the Director of Volunteer Services.  

• Collaborating with staff to coordinate large-scale volunteer projects and community service events.  

• Assisting with the review and revision of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed.  

• Planning and coordinating successful food drives while ensuring sponsors and community partners receive appropriate recognition for their support.

Facility Operations: 

• Maintain CDL License per guidelines under FMCSA/USDOT and a safe driving record. 

• Submit to and pass random drug testing per FSWVA and Federal, State, and Local requirements. 

• Responsible in ensuring that all inter-facility product and asset transfers meet policy requirements. 

• Pickup food and products from member donors using Food Bank vehicles. 

• Deliver food and products to member agencies or other destination as instructed using Food Bank vehicles. 

• Maintain cleanliness of vehicles and notify supervisor of any irregularity in the performance of the vehicles. 

• Maintain procedures in receiving and shipping product to and from the Food Bank including loading, unloading truck and storage of product according to established procedures. 

• Process Agency orders including reading orders, checking orders for accuracy and packing orders. 

• Accurately tag pallets with codes, cases and weights. 

• Assist in directing flow of product in warehouse. 

• Monitors first in/first out system on date-coded products. 

• Maintain the restocking of the pull-floor. 

• Assist the Quality Assurance Department with product handling and storage. 

• Assist with local Food Drives and special events related to area of responsibility. 

3. Maintains and follows effective processes for office communications and administrative procedures. 

• Maintain proper vehicle inspections and documentation. 

• Document and record movement of product according to established procedures.
